One of Baton Rouge’s most recognizable restaurants is celebrating 25 years in business. Zippy’s Burritos, Tacos & More opened September 27, 2001, just 16 days after 9/11, in a former gas station on Perkins Road.
One of Zippy’s most recognizable features has nothing to do with its menu. The restaurant’s roadside sign has developed a personality of its own, giving passing drivers something to laugh about on Perkins Road. In his anniversary message, Hendrick recalled how his friend Scott Jones of Jones Sign Company designed the original sign and suggested adding a reader board. It was a small decision that would eventually give Zippy’s one of its most memorable trademarks.
In a heartfelt anniversary message, Hendrick thanked the employees, customers, friends and family who helped the restaurant survive hurricanes, floods, a pandemic and the everyday challenges of running a business.
He gave special recognition to his wife, Kathy, who originally spotted the old gas station.
Hendrick also remembered several employees and supporters who have passed away, recognizing their contributions to the restaurant’s success.
After 25 years of feeding Baton Rouge and keeping motorists laughing, Hendrick wrapped up his anniversary reflections by heading back to work to fix a broken grill.
