Southern University in Baton Rouge is among six historically Black colleges and universities in Louisiana receiving a combined $14.2 million in new federal funding.
U.S. Sen. John Kennedy announced the funding Wednesday, saying the money will come through the U.S. Department of Education and is intended to support Louisiana HBCUs, their students and workforce development efforts.
Southern University A&M College in Baton Rouge will receive the largest individual allocation at $3,281,192.
The funding announced for Louisiana schools includes:
- Southern University A&M College: $3,281,192
- Grambling State University: $2,886,853
- Southern University at New Orleans: $2,513,428
- Xavier University: $2,513,428
- Dillard University: $1,535,355
- Southern University Shreveport: $1,476,067
The Louisiana awards are part of a broader federal investment in HBCUs. The U.S. Department of Education announced this week that more than $174 million in additional one-time funding is being directed to HBCUs nationwide.
Kennedy, who serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the Louisiana funding will help the universities provide students with skills and educational opportunities while contributing to the state’s workforce and economy.
