Baton Rouge Ranks 94th Among America’s Greenest Cities in New Study

Downtown Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge landed near the bottom of a new ranking of the greenest cities in the United States.

WalletHub ranked Baton Rouge No. 94 among the nation’s 100 largest cities in its 2026 Greenest Cities in America study. The Capital City received an overall score of 37.82.

The study compared cities across 28 indicators grouped into four categories. Baton Rouge ranked 81st for environment, 67th for transportation, 98th for energy sources and 93rd for lifestyle and policy.

Baton Rouge also ranked among the cities with the highest greenhouse gas emissions per capita and had one of the lowest percentages of green space in the study.

WalletHub evaluated factors including air and water quality, green space, commuting habits, renewable energy use, solar installations, farmers markets and green-energy programs. The study examined the city proper rather than the broader Baton Rouge metropolitan area.

Louisiana’s other city included in the ranking performed considerably better. New Orleans finished No. 51 overall and ranked fifth nationally for percentage of green space.
